Bank Overdraft

If you look at all the types of credit that are available you will find that the one that sticks out the most and is used most often just happens to be banking overdraft. This is when the bank says that you can use more than you have in one account and they will protect that amount.

How to Start One

Depending on who you bank with will determine how you can begin to get this service that many banks offer. With the new technologies that are available there are quite a few ways that you can sign up for this offer. Many have that you can call to the bank and start it up. Another option is usually through the internet. Credit has never been made easier. The key to remember is that you don’t want to do this unless you have this coverage. If you have overdraft without the protection and you know this you might want to call them and you could work something out.

Benefits of Using Bank Overdraft

Some of us miss out on buying items because pay day is right around the corner. We know we’ll have the money in two days but that sale may end that day. With bank overdraft as one of those types of credit, you can get those items knowing that you can later pay it off. Thing to remember is that you don’t want to do this too often.

The Downfalls

There are a few disadvantages to this sort of credit. Let’s run through a few of those. For starters, there is usually an initial fee to sign up for this service. You must set up a limit with your bank first. If you don’t, you’ll find that you pay a higher amount. Yet, ironically enough, if you go past the limit you get charged more. You’ll also have to make sure that you pay off any bank overdrafts if you switch banks or they can come get it from you as you are still then indebted to the bank.

Discounted Bank Overdrafts

You can find some bank overdraft services that are free for those who are members of the bank or are really cheap. Some will allow you go over just a slight amount without giving you these high charges. This usually falls under for students as they are so new to credit. Many banks have a plan where they don’t charge you for overdraft when it’s under a certain amount. This is normally because they charge an initial fee to join this program and that will normally cover some of the cost.

Wrongly Charged

Banks are a business after all. They need to make their money too. While this is a type of credit and one fee should only be charged. They might try to charge you more. In theory, a bank should only charge you for the amount it cost them to cover the cost, but many are known to tack on a few extra dollars. While this is wrong in a sense, courts have ruled in favor of banks. Just view what you are signing. Credit is great to have and with all the types of credit that are out there it’s amazing. You just have to be careful and that includes bank overdraft.
