The current financial crisis has meant that many people have either lost their jobs altogether or been put on short time with lower pay. The result of economic decisions in recent years has resulted in a global economic crisis and credit crunch that has left many people drowning in a sea of debt that they have no idea how to manage.
If you are serious about managing your debts and don’t want to continue the bad debt management habits that you have developed in the past, then you need to get yourself some debt counselling. Whatever you do, don’t be swayed by companies that offer you debt consolidation programmes, they don’t work for everyone and you will end up owing more money than you did to begin with because of the amount the company charges for their services.
You don’t have to pay for debt counselling, both the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, offer free advice and help with managing your debts. When you go for an appointment with an agent at one of these organizations, take with you a budget that shows all of your income and as much as you can think of in outgoings. Once they receive your financial statement, it will be a lot easier to work with you on developing a programme that will eventually have you debt free.
